A walk round the East Coast Nature reserve and Newcastle seafront

January 13 @ 10:30 am - 12:30 pm

Short eared owl

The Scheduled monthly walk this month is to Newcastle seafront Co. Wicklow, and the East coast nature reserve owned by Birdwatch Ireland.

The Newcastle seafront Co. Wicklow, is always an fruitful location holding a wide variety of birds, and there is an excellent viewshed to observed birds along the shoreline like the snow buntings that have been there the past few months, red-throated divers in the surf hunting their prey, and inland hen harrier and short-eared owl have been regularly sighted foraging in the long vegetation inland from the railway track, in the vicinity of the Newcastle aerodrome.

The East Coast Nature reserve is home to many birds and the Birdwatch Ireland feeders attract many birds including at times the Great spotted woodpecker. This week a Brambling (somewhat similar to a Chaffinch, but a not so common visitor to Ireland in the Winter) was spotted there, so here’s hoping for a wonderful day out.
